Gargoyles Weekly Update: April 1, 2026

Gargoyles Weekly Update: April 1, 2026
GREENSBORO, NC – The Greensboro Gargoyles, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes and the AHL’s Chicago Wolves, are on their last road trip of the inaugural season, making their final stop in Allen, TX to play three games against the Americans.

WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK
The Gargoyles were on the road in Portland, ME for two games against the Mariners on Saturday and Sunday, March 28-29. The Mariners won both games with a tightly contested 3-2 Saturday result and decisive 6-0 shutout on Sunday.

The Gargoyles cut into the Mariners lead with a shorthanded goal but fell just short in a 3-2 loss on Saturday afternoon at Cross Insurance Arena. Maine opened the scoring late in the first before David Gagnon answered early in the second, assisted by Ethan Leyh and Blake Biondi. The Mariners regained control with a power play goal and added another during a 5-on-3 to take a 3-1 lead, but Gagnon struck again shorthanded, his first career shorthanded goal, to bring Greensboro within one. The Gargoyles pushed in the third, outshooting Maine and pulling Nikita Quapp for the extra attacker late, but were unable to find the equalizer as the Mariners held on.

Greensboro was undone by Maine’s special teams in a 6-0 loss to the Mariners on Sunday afternoon. After a scoreless first period, Maine broke through early in the second and quickly took control with a pair of power play goals, then capitalized on a 5-on-3 to extend the lead. Xander Lamppa added two more, including a power play marker in the final seconds of the period, as the Mariners built a 5-0 advantage. Ben Allison capped the scoring with another power play goal in the third, finishing a 4-for-7 day with the man advantage. Ruslan Khazheyev made 25 saves in 40 minutes before Nikita Quapp stopped seven of eight shots in relief, while Greensboro’s power play went scoreless as the Mariners completed the weekend sweep.

ON DECK
The Gargoyles have three games this weekend, entering the final three weeks of the inaugural season. The team is in Allen, TX for their first meeting with the Allen Americans, kicking off Thursday morning at 10:30 AM CST.

The Gargoyles top line has been on fire, led by Blake Biondi, David Gagnon, and Ethan Leyh. With Biondi called up to the AHL, Gagnon and Leyh will have extra pressure against a high flying Americans offense who have scored 20 goals in their past three games. Leyh leads the active roster with 28 points (10G, 18A) in 34 games. Since returning from Chicago, Leyh has seven points in his past six games including two multi point efforts. After scoring two goals on Saturday, Gagnon now leads the franchise with 15 goals this season. Gagnon has five goals in his last six games, three multi point games in that span, and 22 points in 42 games. Artyom Borshyov joined the 20 point club with assists in consecutive games, adding his 21st point (3G, 18A) on Saturday in Maine. The Gargoyles power play was held 0-for-3 last weekend, staying 26th in the ECHL at 15.1 percent. The penalty kill dropped to 27th in the ECHL after Maine capitalized six times, now 77.1 percent on the season.

The Americans are the ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Ottawa Senators and the AHL’s Belleville Senators. Brayden Watts and Danny Katic both boast point per game stat lines, leading the Americans. Watts has 62 points (9G, 43A) in 62 games, followed by Katic with 56 points (31G, 25A) in 53 games. Marco Cosentini leads the crease with 17 wins in 30 games played. He holds a 2.78 goals against average and a .919 save percentage. Jackson Parsons holds the stats edge. Parsons signed an NHL deal with the Senators last summer and has posted a 2.41 goals against average and .923 save percentage in 22 appearances. The Americans special teams are strong, ninth on the power play (20.7%), and 12th on the penalty kill (83.7%).

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT- Demerios Koumontzis
Demetrios Koumontzis to support the Black Child Development Institute (BCDI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing year-round academic support and enrichment opportunities to students who have been historically underserved in Guilford County Schools.

BCDI works to improve educational outcomes and expand access to resources for children and families through tutoring, mentoring, and community-based programming. With a focus on building confidence, academic success, and a sense of belonging, the organization plays a vital role in supporting students both inside and outside the classroom.

Koumontzis has spent time away from the rink volunteering directly with students at BCDI and will further that connection on April 12 when the Gargoyles host the Worcester Railers at First Horizon Coliseum. As part of the initiative, 60 students from BCDI will be welcomed to the game for a behind-the-scenes experience, including the opportunity to go on the bench for warmups, welcome the team onto the ice from inside the tunnel, and join the team in the locker room for the reading of the starting lineup.

To support BCDI’s ongoing programming, Koumontzis is auctioning a signed pair of his game-worn skates, while the Gargoyles will raffle a team-signed Wizard Night jersey. An open donation link is also available for fans and community members who wish to contribute.
