GREENSBORO, NC – The Greensboro Gargoyles, proud ECHL affiliate of the defending Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes and the AHL’s Chicago Wolves, announced the four players who will make up the team’s leadership corps for the 2026-27 season. Demetrios Koumontzis, Artyom Borshyov, Shane Ott, and Tristan De Jong were selected by the coaching staff to wear letters this season. Legendary Greensboro hockey coach Jeff Brubaker, who led both the Greensboro Monarchs and Greensboro Generals during his tenure, had the honor of ceremonially presenting the letters following Tuesday’s practice.
Koumontzis was named the second captain in franchise history. The 26-year-old is one of five remaining players from the Gargoyles’ inaugural Opening Night roster. Koumontzis was named an alternate captain on January 14, 2026, midway through the team’s first season. Selected by the Calgary Flames in the fourth round of the 2018 NHL Draft, the Arizona native enters his fourth professional season.
Borshyov, another original Gargoyle, led the team in games played last season after appearing in the first 67 contests. The Belarus native will once again serve as an alternate captain for the 2026-27 season. His leadership experience dates back to his collegiate career, when he served as captain of Lake Superior State University during his senior season in 2023-24 before wearing an "A" at Lindenwood University during his fifth year in 2024-25.
The coaching staff awarded two additional letters to new faces in the locker room, naming Ott and De Jong alternate captains. Both players were acquired through future considerations trades this offseason.
Ott, 26, was a standout rookie with the Bloomington Bison last season, recording 46 points in 69 games. The Niagara University graduate will wear a letter for the first time in his professional career.
De Jong, 26, appeared in 42 games on the Greenville Swamp Rabbits’ blue line last season. The defenseman brings extensive leadership experience, having served as a two-time captain at the University of Guelph and an alternate captain during his final QMJHL season with the Moncton Wildcats.
Opening Weekend is set for Friday and Saturday, October 16-17, when the Gargoyles host the Reading Royals at First Horizon Coliseum.
