Raymond’s First Career Goal Lifts Gargoyles to 3-2 School Day Win
GREENSBORO, NC – The Greensboro Gargoyles extended their third consecutive regulation win and a six-game point streak on Thursday morning, 3-2 over the Maine Mariners while hosting their first School Day of the season. The 10:30 AM start at First Horizon Coliseum saw 9,324 students from across North Carolina bring the energy while learning the game, part of the Gargoyles’ initiative to promote the growth of the sport in the south.

ECHL veteran and AHL-contracted Matthew Quercia helped kick off the scoring in his Gargoyles debut, setting up Tristan De Jong for his first goal of the season, 4:59 into the first period. Greensboro closed the opening frame strong as Ethan Leyh fed Markus Oden for his third goal in four games to take a 2-0 lead with 3:53 left in the first period.

Ben Raymond found his first career goal as Austen May kept the puck inside the offensive zone from the blue-line, setting Raymond up on a breakaway with 5:44 left in the second period.

The Mariners cut into the 3-0 lead with back-to-back third period goals from Willum Deveaux at 2:47 and Ben Allison at 10:22, but Greensboro held on down the stretch for a 3-2 victory.

Yegor Velmakin finished with 26 wins and his second consecutive win. The Gargoyles penalty kill has stopped 13 straight, while the power play was held off the board.

The Gargoyles host the Mariners two more games on Friday and Saturday, November 6-7 for Wizard Weekend, both 7 PM starts. Greensboro has a franchise high .625 points percentage, with 10 points, sitting second in the North Division and tied for third in the Eastern Conference.
