GREENSBORO, NC — The Greensboro Gargoyles finished their inaugural weekend with one point towards the ECHL standings, dropping their Sunday contest 3-0 to the Jacksonville Icemen.
Jacksonville goaltender Cameron Rowe made his first professional start and stopped every puck sent his way. Greensboro controlled much of the pace and outshot the Icemen 32–22, but Rowe stood tall behind a disciplined defensive effort.
The Gargoyles went short handed 4:42 into the opening frame, but continued their defensive success with their first of four kills on the night. The Icemen capitalized late in the period when Brody Crane found the back of the net at 13:10 giving Jacksonville the lead.
Each team traded one power play chance in the second period with both penalty kills holding firm. Greensboro generated its best looks in the middle frame outshooting Jacksonville 16–5 but could not break through.
The third period saw the Gargoyles penalty kill tested twice more at 5:13 and 8:29, killing both. Jacksonville doubled the lead at 13:15 on a goal from Bennett MacArthur. The forward was sent off for hooking at 15:56 giving Greensboro a late power play, but the Icemen survived and MacArthur returned to score his second of the night at 17:07 to make it 3–0.
“You’re starting right from ground zero, where you have nothing,” said Head Coach Scott Burt regarding building a new franchise. “It is pretty hard, it really is… we ran into two hot goalies. I think maybe our shot selections could have been better but we had shots hit the post, we had two-on-ones, we put up 30 plus shots again tonight so we have to just stick with it and worry about the next one.”
Tyler Weiss led all skaters with five shots while Ruslan Khazheyev stopped 19 of 22 in net for Greensboro. Jacksonville was outshot 71–44 on the weekend but leaned on back to back standout goaltending performances to earn consecutive wins.
The Gargoyles finish their home stand to kick off the Inaugural Season next weekend, hosting Reading. Friday, October 24 at 7 PM and Saturday, October 25 at 7 PM. Saturday’s Monster Mash will feature the team’s first specialty theme jerseys, celebrating the spooky spirit of Halloween.
