GREENSBORO, NC –The Greensboro Gargoyles extended a franchise-high five-game point streak with a 4-1 win over the Norfolk Admirals, finishing their three-game weekend with five of a possible six points and jumping to a tie for second in the North Division standings.
Parker Lindauer kicked off the scoring 8:12 into the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Markus Oden extended a three game point streak with the primary assist and Ethan Leyh picked up his first point of the night.
In the second period, the Admirals tied the game 1-1 from Justin Young’s second goal of the weekend. The Admirals killed three penalties in the second period and appeared to have momentum in their favor, but a Gargoyles penalty kill would be the difference maker.
9:10 into the third period, Lindauer set up Leyh for his third goal of the weekend, scoring shorthanded on a beautiful saucer pass across three Admirals sticks. Lindauer carried that momentum adding his second goal of the afternoon 13:30 into the third from Oden and Austen May.
Leyh buried a 200-foot empty net goal to cap off the 4-1 win with 58 seconds remaining, giving Tristan De Jong his first point as a Gargoyle.
Yegor Velmakin made 26 saves in his first ECHL victory. Velmakin has helped the Gargoyles to points in each of his last three starts.
The Gargoyles top line was unstoppable this weekend, recording 16 points between the two wins on Saturday and Sunday. After returning from his AHL call-up, Leyh posted seven points on Saturday and Sunday, becoming the franchise’s leader in scoring by eclipsing Tyler Weiss. Leyh now has 36 points in 40 games with the Gargoyles. Lindauer added back-to-back three point outings, and his first multi-goal game on Sunday. Oden helped with the game-winning goal on Saturday and two assists Sunday.
The Gargoyles host the Maine Mariners for three games on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, November 5-7. Thursday, the weekend opens at 10:30 AM on School Day, welcoming students from across the state of North Carolina. Then, Doyle casts his spell on Wizard Weekend Friday and Saturday night at 7 PM.
